In the past decade, data centers used standalone "tower" UPSs which are typically overprovisioned to provide "n+1" redundancy and support data center growth. Nowadays, data centers have been getting bigger and it is a huge waste to install underutilized, over-size ordinary UPS and it is one reason why there is a growing demand for modular UPS.

Flexible power management, flexible redundancy and ECO mode of modular UPS enable users to achieve both economic and social benefits. Modular UPS has higher efficiency thanks to right-sizing closer to the optimal power capacity. By simply adding more power modules and batteries, it can meet higher capacities and run time. The modular structure and hot-swappable design also improve O&M costs.

Omdia said the Modular UPS market would continue to grow

Modular UPS revenue grew 9.5% and reach $1.1bn in 2020 despite the COVID-19 pandemic and demand for modular UPS systems will remain strong in the aftermath of the COVID-19, said Omdia, a technology research powerhouse.

Modular UPS's market growth has been backed by the strong demand for hyperscale data centers, cloud usage, and large colocation facilities. Omdia forecasts the global modular UPS market will reach $1.3bn in 2021, an increase of 15.8% compared to 2020.
